A Name That Reflects History

Museums play a crucial role in preserving history, and sometimes, a name change is necessary to better align with their mission. That’s exactly what happened with the Pacific Aviation Museum, which was renamed Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum in 2018. The decision was made to create a stronger connection to the historic site where it stands—Ford Island, the heart of the infamous attack on December 7, 1941.

By adopting the name Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, the institution clearly identifies itself as part of the national historic landmark, making it easier for visitors to recognize its significance. The update also helps honor the legacy of those who served and fought at Pearl Harbor, ensuring that the world remembers this pivotal moment in World War II history.

One of the most successful American pilots on that fateful day was Second Lieutenant George Welch. He, along with his wingman Kenneth Taylor, managed to shoot down at least four enemy aircraft, making him one of the most effective defenders during the attack.

On the morning of December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in a military strike that came as a shock to the U.S. The base was targeted by 353 Japanese aircraft in two waves, with the objective of neutralizing the United States Pacific Fleet, thereby preventing it from interfering with Japanese military operations in Southeast Asia

The Arizona Memorial, located at Pearl Harbor, marks the resting place of 1,177 of the 1,512 sailors and Marines killed on the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The memorial is built over the remains of the ship, which still lies at the bottom of the harbor. The memorial is visited by more than two million people annually and is one of Hawaii’s top tourist attractions. The memorial is accessible only by boat and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a devastating blow to the United States. The Pacific Fleet was severely damaged, with eight battleships sunk or heavily damaged, as well as numerous other ships and aircraft. The attack resulted in the deaths of 2,403 Americans and the injury of 1,178. The attack was a major factor in the United States’ decision to enter World War II, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous “Day of Infamy” speech to Congress, declaring war on Japan the following day.

How do I get to Pearl Harbor?

There are several options for getting a shuttle to Pearl Harbor. One option is to take a tour from Waikiki that includes round-trip transportation by bus or minivan. These tours typically make stops at the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, and the Pacific Aviation Museum.

Another option is to take public transportation, such as the city bus, to the Aloha Stadium, where you can catch the Pearl Harbor shuttle. The shuttle is run by Roberts Hawaii and will take you directly to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

You can also book a private tour package that can arrange transportation for you. Keep in mind the tours and shuttle schedules are subject to change and it’s important to check and make reservations in advance, as the site is quite popular.
