The History of the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) Battleship

The USS Oklahoma (BB-37) was a Nevada-class battleship that played a crucial role in the U.S. Navy before meeting its tragic fate during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Commissioned in 1916, the battleship was built with cutting-edge technology for its time, featuring oil-fueled boilers and enhanced armor protection. It served in World War I, escorting convoys across the Atlantic, and later underwent modernization to improve its firepower and defenses. By the late 1930s, the USS Oklahoma was stationed at Pearl Harbor as tensions with Japan escalated.

On December 7, 1941, the USS Oklahoma was one of the first ships targeted during Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Within minutes, the battleship was struck by multiple torpedoes, causing it to capsize and trapping hundreds of sailors inside. Despite heroic rescue efforts, 429 crew members lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest losses that day. The sinking of the USS Oklahoma, along with other devastating blows to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, propelled the United States into World War II.

The USS Oklahoma Battleship: The Lost Sister of Nevada

After the attack, efforts were made to salvage the USS Oklahoma. Unlike other damaged battleships that were repaired and returned to service, the Oklahoma was deemed beyond full restoration. It was refloated in 1943, stripped of useful materials, and sold for scrap. However, while being towed to the mainland in 1947, the ship mysteriously sank in the Pacific Ocean, never reaching its final destination. Its disappearance remains one of the lesser-known yet haunting chapters of Pearl Harbor’s history.

The USS Oklahoma Memorial at Pearl Harbor stands as a tribute to the sailors and Marines who perished during the attack. Dedicated in 2007, the memorial features 429 white marble columns, each representing a life lost. Positioned near the USS Missouri, the site symbolizes both the tragic beginning of America’s involvement in World War II and its victorious conclusion, as the Missouri was where Japan officially surrendered in 1945.

The USS Oklahoma Memorial at Pearl Harbor (photo cred: Farragutful via Wikimedia Commons Licensing https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en)

Visiting the USS Oklahoma Memorial offers a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served. Unlike the USS Arizona Memorial, which honors those entombed in the sunken battleship, the Oklahoma’s tribute focuses on remembering the individuals who were aboard when it capsized. The design of the memorial allows visitors to reflect on the cost of war while standing on the very ground where history unfolded.

The USS Oklahoma’s story is a testament to the resilience and bravery of the U.S. Navy. Its loss at Pearl Harbor was a devastating moment, but it also marked the turning point that led the United States to emerge as a global force in World War II. Today, the battleship’s legacy lives on through the memorial, ensuring future generations remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served aboard the USS Oklahoma.

Where is the USS Oklahoma Now?

The USS Oklahoma went down in the Pacific Ocean in 1947, approximately 500 to 700 miles northeast of Oahu, after being towed from Pearl Harbor during a storm. The crews of the tugboats let go of their tow cables to protect themselves, causing the ship to sink in waters far deeper than those at Pearl Harbor. However, the exact location of the wreck was never recorded.

Even with these difficulties, there is still hope that the USS Oklahoma will be discovered. The search for the ship continues to inspire people and serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who served.

Built to serve as a symbol of American naval power during the early 20th century, the Utah was involved in numerous key naval operations throughout its active years. However, its most significant moment came on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The ship’s history, from its early days of service to its tragic end, provides a remarkable glimpse into the evolution of naval warfare and the impact of World War II on the Pacific theater.

At the time of its commissioning, the USS Utah was considered a modern battleship, designed with powerful guns and armor to withstand enemy fire. Initially, the ship was stationed on the U.S. East Coast before being reassigned to the Pacific Fleet. Throughout the years, the Utah took part in several training exercises and maneuvers, demonstrating the growing importance of naval presence in the Pacific as tensions increased between the United States and Japan. The ship, like many others, was part of the prelude to the eventual conflict that would engulf the world.

On the fateful morning of December 7, 1941, the USS Utah was moored at Pearl Harbor, alongside several other ships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. As the Japanese launched their surprise attack, the Utah was struck by torpedoes, causing significant damage to the ship. The attack led to the loss of 64 crew members, and the Utah was eventually sunk. Despite being severely damaged, the ship did not fully sink right away and was left partially submerged, marking it as one of the few battleships that survived the initial attack but never returned to active duty.

The sinking of the USS Utah during the Pearl Harbor attack had profound implications for both the U.S. Navy and the broader American military strategy. The event was one of the key moments that propelled the United States into World War II. In addition to the Utah, other battleships like the USS Arizona were also destroyed, but the loss of these ships underscored the vulnerability of the fleet to modern warfare tactics. In the aftermath of the attack, the U.S. Navy quickly shifted focus, investing in aircraft carriers and submarines to dominate the Pacific in the coming years.

Today, the USS Utah’s wreck remains submerged at Pearl Harbor, a haunting reminder of the events that unfolded that day. Although the ship is no longer a symbol of active naval power, its legacy lives on as a memorial to those who lost their lives. The site where the Utah rests is preserved and visited by thousands each year, as part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The sunken ship serves as a testament to the resilience of the U.S. Navy and the ultimate sacrifice made by its sailors.

The remains of the USS Utah Battleship at Pearl Harbor Memorial.

The significance of the USS Utah extends beyond its role in the attack on Pearl Harbor. The ship’s story represents the broader narrative of American military engagement in World War II. The loss of the Utah, along with other ships, served as a pivotal moment in naval history that helped the United States and its allies pivot from defensive strategies to aggressive campaigns in the Pacific. The Utah’s history serves as a reminder of the bravery of those who served aboard it and of the broader sacrifices made during one of the most defining conflicts in world history.

History of The USS Arizona Battleship (BB-39)

The USS Arizona (BB-39) holds a prominent place in U.S. naval history as one of the most iconic battleships of the early 20th century. Commissioned in 1916, this Pennsylvania-class battleship was built at the height of World War I but did not see action during that conflict. Instead, the USS Arizona became a symbol of American military strength in the interwar period. At over 600 feet in length and equipped with twelve 14-inch guns, it represented the cutting-edge naval technology of its time. Stationed primarily in the Pacific Fleet, the ship was a key component of the United States’ growing naval presence in the Pacific Ocean during the 1930s.

The ship’s tragic fate was sealed on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As part of a surprise offensive that brought the U.S. into World War II, Japanese bombers targeted battleships moored at Ford Island in Hawaii. The USS Arizona suffered a catastrophic explosion when an armor-piercing bomb detonated its forward ammunition magazines. This single blast caused the ship to sink quickly, claiming the lives of 1,177 crew members. The destruction of the Arizona accounted for nearly half of the total casualties sustained by U.S. forces during the Pearl Harbor attack.

In the aftermath of the attack, the USS Arizona was deemed too damaged to be salvaged and was left at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. Its remains became both a gravesite and a symbol of national sacrifice. Over the years, public and military interest grew in preserving the site as a memorial. In 1962, the USS Arizona Memorial was formally dedicated, spanning the sunken hull of the battleship. Designed by architect Alfred Preis, the memorial features a striking white structure that appears to float above the water, symbolizing both loss and hope.

Today, the USS Arizona Memorial is managed by the National Park Service and remains one of the most visited historical sites in Hawaii. It attracts millions of visitors annually, serving as a poignant reminder of the cost of war and the resilience of the American people. Accessible by boat, the memorial allows visitors to look down upon the sunken remains of the battleship, which are still visible beneath the surface. The site also serves as the final resting place for many of the crew members who perished, making it a deeply emotional experience for those who visit.

The memorial includes a shrine room listing the names of the 1,177 sailors and Marines who lost their lives aboard the USS Arizona. The oil that continues to seep from the wreckage, often called the “tears of the Arizona,” serves as a haunting reminder of the events of December 7, 1941. The site has also become a place for educational programs and ceremonies, including annual commemorations on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. These events honor both the fallen and the survivors who endured that pivotal day in American history.

The USS Arizona Battleship’s Legacy

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, situated on Ford Island in Hawaii, stands as a testament to the rich history of aviation in the Pacific region. Established in 1999, the museum opened its doors to the public on December 7, 2006, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Its location on Ford Island is historically significant, as this area was central to the events of December 7, 1941, when Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, propelling the United States into World War II.

The museum occupies two historic seaplane hangars, Hangar 37 and Hangar 79, both of which bore witness to the events of World War II. Hangar 37, constructed in 1939, serves as the primary exhibition space, housing a vast collection of aircraft and exhibits that chronicle the evolution of aviation in the Pacific theater. Hangar 79, notable for its windows still bearing bullet holes from the 1941 attack, contains additional exhibits, including the Flying Tigers exhibit and various helicopters, jets, and civil aircraft.

One of the museum’s most significant features is the Ford Island Control Tower. This historic structure, which transmitted the first radio alert during the Pearl Harbor attack, has been meticulously restored to preserve its legacy. The control tower offers visitors panoramic views of the surrounding area, providing a tangible connection to the events that unfolded during the war.

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum plays a crucial role in preserving and presenting the history of aviation in the Pacific. Its exhibits encompass over 75 years of aviation history, featuring more than 50 aircraft on display. Visitors can explore authentic World War II-era hangars, engage with interactive exhibits, and even experience state-of-the-art flight simulators, offering an immersive journey into the past.

Beyond its role as a museum, the institution is dedicated to education and scholarship. It offers various programs aimed at inspiring and educating future generations about the significance of aviation and the history of the Pacific region. The museum’s commitment to education is evident through its scholarship opportunities and educational programs that reach thousands of young individuals each year.

In recognition of its efforts to preserve and promote aviation history, the museum was named an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution in 2012. This affiliation underscores the museum’s significance as a center for historical preservation and education. Through its comprehensive exhibits and programs, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum ensures that the legacy of the Pacific’s aviation history continues to inspire and educate visitors from around the world.

The History of the USS Bowfin Submarine

The USS Bowfin, a Balao-class submarine, is a celebrated piece of naval history docked at the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii. Nicknamed the “Pearl Harbor Avenger,” the Bowfin was launched exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1942. This timing underscored its mission to retaliate against the forces responsible for the devastation that drew the United States into World War II. Over the course of its service, the Bowfin played a crucial role in the Pacific Theater, completing nine war patrols and contributing significantly to the Allied war effort.

During its wartime career, the USS Bowfin was credited with sinking 44 enemy vessels, totaling over 160,000 tons. This made it one of the most successful submarines of World War II. The Bowfin’s crew demonstrated exceptional skill and bravery, often operating in hostile waters where the risk of enemy counterattacks was high. Its success in disrupting Japanese shipping lines directly impacted the enemy’s ability to resupply and reinforced the strategic importance of submarine warfare during the conflict. The Bowfin’s achievements earned it a Presidential Unit Citation and numerous battle stars.

After World War II, the Bowfin remained in service but saw its role evolve with the changing nature of naval warfare. It underwent modernization during the early Cold War to enhance its capabilities, although it was ultimately overshadowed by more advanced nuclear-powered submarines. The Bowfin was officially decommissioned from active service in 1971, marking the end of an illustrious operational career. Despite its retirement, the submarine’s legacy continued to resonate as a symbol of American resilience and ingenuity.

In 1979, the USS Bowfin found a permanent home at Pearl Harbor, where it was transformed into a museum and memorial. The decision to preserve the Bowfin was part of a broader effort to honor the submariners who served and sacrificed during World War II. Its location at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, near the USS Arizona and USS Missouri, creates a powerful connection to pivotal moments in American history. Visitors can explore the submarine’s interior and learn about the daily lives of its crew, gaining a deeper appreciation for the challenges and triumphs of wartime submarine service.

The USS Bowfin Museum and Park also serves as an educational hub, highlighting the critical role submarines played in securing victory in the Pacific. Interactive exhibits and artifacts provide insight into the technology, tactics, and human stories that defined the Bowfin’s missions. The museum’s efforts to preserve and share this history ensure that future generations understand the sacrifices made during World War II and the importance of maintaining peace through preparedness.

Today, the USS Bowfin stands as a testament to the courage and determination of the men who served aboard submarines during one of the most challenging periods in modern history. Its presence at Pearl Harbor serves as both a reminder of the past and an inspiration for the future. By visiting the Bowfin, individuals not only pay tribute to those who served but also deepen their understanding of the submarine’s pivotal role in shaping the outcome of World War II.

The History of the USS Battleship Missouri

The USS Missouri, affectionately nicknamed the “Mighty Mo,” is one of the most celebrated battleships in American naval history. Commissioned on June 11, 1944, this Iowa-class battleship played a pivotal role during World War II and beyond. Designed for speed, power, and endurance, the USS Missouri was an engineering marvel of its time, boasting nine 16-inch guns and a top speed of 33 knots. Her presence symbolized American strength and determination during one of the most tumultuous periods in modern history.

The USS Missouri entered World War II at a crucial juncture. By early 1945, the United States was preparing for the final push in the Pacific theater. The ship provided critical firepower during the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, bombarding enemy positions and supporting ground forces. However, the Missouri’s most famous moment came on September 2, 1945, when it hosted the formal surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay. This historic event marked the end of the war and solidified the ship’s place in history as a symbol of peace and victory.

Following World War II, the USS Missouri continued to serve with distinction. During the Korean War, she provided artillery support for United Nations forces, demonstrating the enduring value of battleships in modern warfare. Despite the advent of newer technologies, the Missouri’s versatility and firepower kept her relevant. She was decommissioned in 1955 but was later modernized and returned to service in the 1980s as part of President Reagan’s naval expansion, participating in operations such as Desert Storm in the early 1990s.

In 1992, the USS Missouri was finally decommissioned for the last time. Positioned near the USS Arizona Memorial, the Missouri represents the beginning and end of the United States’ involvement in World War II. Together, these two ships tell a powerful story of sacrifice, resilience, and triumph.

The nickname “Mighty Mo” underscores the ship’s formidable presence and reputation. Sailors and admirers alike were struck by her sheer size and power, as well as her ability to endure the challenges of war. Over the decades, the Missouri has become a beloved symbol of American naval heritage, inspiring generations to learn about and honor the sacrifices made during times of conflict.

Today, the USS Missouri remains a popular tourist destination at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, drawing visitors from around the world to explore her decks and learn about her storied past. Guided tours provide insights into life aboard a battleship, from the cramped quarters of the crew to the towering main guns that once roared in battle. As the “Mighty Mo” continues her mission as a museum, she ensures that the legacy of those who served aboard her lives on, bridging the past with the present.
